This is SO GOOD, oh my lord. You say so much about the relationship, all the relationships, in so little space - Vargas's hostility to Duncan and Sabin's greater closeness, Sabin having the upper hand in the sparring-as-foreplay, the intimacy of their established relationship but the cracks showing all the same - this is just how I see them and I love every word of it. Thank you so much! I'm sorry it took me so long to comment - I read this when it posted or at least shortly after, but things have been busy.
This is fantastic – I love the glimpse of a moment before everything falls apart, where you can see the growing distance in “He’s teaching us different styles now,” and the tenderness that’s almost enough to bridge the gap for now but won’t be forever. There’s a great sense of looming tragedy.
