This is an elegant solution for how Duncan shows up unharmed in the World of Ruin! There's also a believable messiness to Sabin and Vargas's relationship and the way it deteriorates. Vargas as you write him is really interesting too - I particularly like the scene where Duncan actually asks him if the wants the dojo and he's completely thrown by it.
Also the deeply weird element where Vargas goes on about The Inherent Eroticism of Having a Sibling and ... in this case he's actually right, lol. And Sabin is so normal about it??? Adds a great background layer to all the other dysfunction going on here.
I'm always so delighted to see your work and I really love how much more in depth you get with Vargas' personality. He is always at conflict with himself for even the smallest things (especially with the flowers) the two of them who were so close after all this time
This idea that Vargas puts on an act to both mask his true feelings but also express them simultaneously feels like he plays the unfortunate role of being caught in the middle of things (like the relationship with the brothers/Sabin's relationship with Duncan) he shouldn't have to be put through but presses on anyway.
Honestly even before this one, your fics inspired me to feel differently towards Vargas and this fic only bolsters that feeling. I would like to say I also headcanon that Sabin doesn't outright kill him either (I have so many ideas for this!!)
